SANGIACOMO CATERINA VINEYARD

CHARDONNAY

Our 2018 Sangiacomo Chardonnay comes from the Catarina vineyard located in the Carneros Region of Sonoma. The Sangiacomo family first planted this vineyard in 1982. The vineyard is bordered by the Sonoma Creek, with silty clay loam with gravel stratas.  The grapes mature slowly while maintaining a vibrant acidity.  The Robert Young clone thrives here.  We partner with the Sangiacomo family, to ensure the highest quality fruit at harvest.  The Chardonnay grapes natural flavors shine from this vineyard.

 

THE WINEMAKING  

We hand pick and manually sort our fruit. The grapes are brought to the winery, where they undergo a second sorting. The whole clusters are pressed gently, and the press fractions are kept seperate. The wine is partially fermented in a cool tank allowing for the natural esters to remain and retain as much fruit as possible. We finish the wine in French Oak barrels and stainless drum allowing for full lees contact and fractional barrel fermentation. The wine is aged on the lees and stirred bi-monthly. We bottle after 9 months to retain the freshness and brightness.

 

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS 

This wine has bright, vibrant acidity and is fresh on the palate. Aromas of lemon curd fill the glass, accented by citrus and pineapple. The wine has silky flavors of pineapple and candied lemon with notes of pear, apple, vanilla, and honeysuckle that round out the finish.

LAS AMIGAS VINEYARD
PINOT NOIR

Our 2018 Carneros Pinot Noir comes from Las Amigas Vineyards, located at the southern end of the Carneros. It is the coolest climate area in the Napa Valley and is the birthplace of some of the finest Pinot Noirs produced. The ideal cooling breezes create a slow, balanced growing season needed to build complexity. This vineyard was planted in 2006. The Pinot Noir clones we carefully selected are 115, Pommard, 777, 459 and Calera, with each clone contributing a different and integral part of the assemblage. The clones are planted on two acres each in the vineyard. The clones create a unique single vineyard wine. Yields are kept low (on average a meager 2.5 tons per acre) to extract the highest quality expression of fruit. 

 

THE WINEMAKING  

We hand pick and sort our fruit in the vineyard. The fruit is destemmed, and lightly crushed into fermentation bins. The crushed fruit is kept cool and reductive on dry ice for several days. We ferment the wine slow initially to allow the temperatures to rise then aggressively punch down by hand daily during the peak of fermentation. Color extraction and tannin are closely monitored to achieve a gentle, elegant wine with light tannins and rich flavors. The wine is pressed off at dryness, and aged in 40% new French oak for a period of 10 months. We ferment each clone separately and blend after aging.  The Pinot Noir clones selected are a key part of the wines depth and richness. We bottle in August of the following year to keep the fruit vibrant and youthful.   

 

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS 

Our 2018 Pinot Noir has a mixture of aromas including cherry and cranberry compote mixed with a touch of cocoa powder. Raspberry, strawberry, plum and rose accent shine. There is a spicy complexity to the fruit, and nice tender accents of vanilla and toast linger in the background. The palate is full and rich with flavors of apple, plum, spice and cherry. This unique blend of clones comes together to express the purity of Pinot.
